Carbon Offset

Create your own Comox Valley carbon offset: Take action to reduce your carbon footprint by supporting the Comox Valley Sustainability Project.

Carbon offsets are a great idea: All people are involved in activities that result in carbon dioxide (Greenhouse gas) being released into the atmosphere. Many people are now choosing to offset the carbon dioxide emissions they create by purchasing carbon dioxide offsets that go to projects that help to reduce the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere.  Despite being a great idea, there have been–unfortunately  -examples of dubious projects that transfer money but have little environmental impact.  The idea of carbon offsetting doesn’t have to be promoted by distant governments or businesses. You could simply decide to donate money to a LOCAL Comox Valley organization, like the Comox Valley Sustainability Project that promotes visible to you sustainability in the community where you live.

If you would like to make a carbon offset equivalent donation to CVSP you can go to the Donate button on our home page and contribute whatever you choose.

Your Carbon Footprint

The average North American’s total carbon footprint comes to 50,000 pounds a year!. We are all responsible for climate change and we all must be part of the solution.

While there are suggested scales to cover various activities, carbon offsets are most appropriately calculated on the basis of a year’s omissions. Some choose to offset only particularly high carbon emitting activities like a plane trip of 30,000 kms emits 8,350 MT (mega tones) of carbon dioxide directly into the upper atmosphere so those serious about climate change make a carbon offset donation of ~$38 cdn .  Interestingly those with a hybrid fuel saving vehicle are responsible for 2.7 MT of CO2 and might offset that with a carbon offset donation of $38 while a gas guzzling SUV emits ~ 20,000 MT CO2 and is offset with a $90 donation.

If you choose to be a leader in fighting climate change you could make an donation to a registered carbon offset or simply—and likely more effectively—donate directly to your local CV Sustainability Project empowering its efforts to build a more sustainable Comox Valley.
